So last night Chucky and I went to the Canberra Theatre to see Weird Al Yankovic in concert.
I was super-excited. Before the concert started, I bought a "White and Nerdy" hoodie (which is awesome), and Chucky bought a "Straight Outta Lynwood" t-shirt. Our seats were really good - about in the middle row, in the centre. First there was a stand-up comedian for 20 minutes, who was okay, and then an interval for 20 minutes. When Al finally was on stage, I was so excited I all but fainted when I saw him. First he did the polka from his new album, and then a few other songs from it.
In-between his songs, clips from Al-TV were shown on screens behind the stage. They were mainly edited interviews he'd done with celebrities. There were breaks between most of the big songs, because he changed his outfit for every song!
For "Fat", he wore the huge fat suit! For "Amish Paradise", he wore his black Amish suit! With the hat! For "It's all about the Pentiums", he wore the shiny silver suit and sunnies from the flimclip. For "The Saga Begins" and "Yoda", he wore his Jedi costume. "Yoda" was INTENSE.
There wasn't much (or any) chit-chat between songs. But before he played "Bob", he said something like "This song recently received the highest accolade a song can get in Australia - it was played on Spicks and Specks." Everyone thought that was great.
As his first encore, he did "White and Nerdy", which was the song everyone had been waiting for. He came onto the stage RIDING A SEGWAY. Then they played "We all have cellphones, so lets get real" (in-joke, in-joke). The last song they played was Albuquerque, which was a total surprise, and was amazingly awesome.
I knew most of the words to all the songs - but these people sitting next to me just sat there - they didn't clap or wave their hands or sing or laugh... I felt like I was being really annoying because I was... *participating* more.
I managed to take some photos and videos of the performance, but they're a bit blurry because I didn't use the flash. But the BEST thing happened AFTER the show.
We went and waited outside the stage door, outside the theatre. There were about 20 people waiting there, with cameras and autograph paraphernalia. We waited for about 40 minutes (it was SO COLD), and then some Canberra Theatre guy came out of the door and said we were to line up in an orderly fashion so we could get the fan-meeting done quickly - Al was very tired. Chucky and I were the 3rd in line! So we went in when it was our turn, and Al was set up at a little desk inside the door. I said hello, and he said hello. I said "Can I get your signature on my cd please?" and he was all "Of course, sure...". I told him it was an awesome concert, and that I'd been looking forward to it my whole life. He thought that was pretty funny (although I was not really joking... I've wanted to see him ever since I saw the "Fat" filmclip when I was a wee lass). Then I asked if we could get a photo of the three of us, and he was really nice and put his arm round me. YES THAT'S RIGHT, WEIRD AL YANKOVIC TOUCHED ME.
His hair is very soft. I felt it on my cheek
It's a nice photo (although I look so happy I'm a little insane). Then I said thankyou, and that I'd see him next time. I don't remember exactly what he said (probably "bye"), but I remember that I came away thinking that he was the nicest man in the world.
So that was my night last night!
